John Lennon"s killer denied parole for 10th time

John Lennon"s killer has been denied parole for a 10th time and will remain behind bars for at least two more years.

Mark David Chapman appeared before New York"s parole board on Wednesday. In a denial decision obtained by The Associated Press Thursday, the board said it had determined Chapman"s release "would be incompatible with the welfare and safety of society and would so deprecate the serious nature of the crime as to undermine respect for the law."

Chapman, 63, shot and killed the former Beatle outside Lennon"s Manhattan apartment on Dec. 8, 1980. He is serving 20-years-to-life in the Wende Correctional Facility in western New York.

"You admittedly carefully planned and executed the murder of a world-famous person for no reason other than to gain notoriety," the parole panel wrote in its denial decision.

"While no one person"s life is any more valuable than another"s life, the fact that you chose someone who was not only a world renown person and beloved by millions, regardless of the pain and suffering you would cause to his family, friends and so many others, you demonstrated a callous disregard for the sanctity of human life and the pain and suffering of others."

It said releasing Chapman would not only "tend to mitigate the seriousness of your crime," but also would endanger public safety because someone might try to harm him out of anger or revenge or to gain similar notoriety.

As Chapman faced the parole panel Wednesday, politicians and fans called for his release to be denied during a rally at Strawberry Fields, Lennon"s memorial in Central Park across from his former home.

Jonas Herbsman, the attorney for Lennon"s widow, Yoko Ono, declined to comment when contacted by The Associated Press.

A transcript of the parole hearing wasn"t immediately released. At previous hearings, Chapman has said he still gets letters about the pain he caused and was sorry for choosing the wrong path to fame.

Chapman will be up for parole again in August 2020.

Medical experts push back as Gwyneth Paltrow"s Goop brand comes to Canada

Gwyneth Paltrow-backed lifestyles brand Goop is making a push into Canada, but critics in the medical community say they"re ready to push back.

Goop chief content officer Elise Loehnen announced Wednesday that the online wellness empire is bringing its series of In Goop Health conferences to Canada for the first time this fall. Its e-commerce site will also expand the selection of products available to Canadians.

Loehnen, who will host the wellness summit in Vancouver on Oct. 27, said the day-long symposium will be more intimate and less "intense" than previous gatherings in the U.S..

With tickets retailing at $400, the event at a "goopified" Stanley Park Pavilion is billed as a "mind-expanding day" featuring panels, wellness workshops and healthful eats prepared by Vancouver chefs.

"[Canadians] are sometimes even a little bit ahead of Goop in terms of where you are on the wellness spectrum, so it feels like a totally natural brand affinity," Loehnen said in a recent phone interview from Montreal.

But some of Goop"s most prominent Canadian skeptics disagree with that assessment.

"They"re in our backyard now," said Timothy Caulfield, an Edmonton-based health science expert and author of Is Gwyneth Paltrow Wrong About Everything? When Celebrity Culture and Science Clash.

"As a scientific community, we have to start thinking of ways that we can use things like the Goop summit to talk about the science, to talk about what the evidence really says, and what you really can do to live a healthy life."

"[Goop] can"t say that they"re going to try to have evidence-based fact checking and then reject the whole concept of science," says Timothy Caulfield, Canada research chair in health law and policy at the University of Alberta. (University of Alberta)

Goop"s expansion into Canada comes as the company adopts what Loehnen calls a more "buttoned-up" approach to fact checking the information on its website in the face of mounting criticism from health experts who say it provides a platform to scientifically dubious information.

While many of Goop"s posts are devoted to travel tips and diet-friendly recipes, the brand has also promoted controversial products and practices that critics say have no proven medical benefits, such as a vaginal steaming service that purportedly "cleanses your uterus," according to the site.

"We typically feature a wide range [of opinions], including many Western doctors, and they"re not necessarily debating what"s in the medical canon," said Loehnen. "A lot of content is around things that are more chronic, not incredibly well understood."

Loehnen said Goop"s content is vetted by a lawyer and a team of scientists and doctors.

Goop is also bringing on a fact checker to review and contextualize information on its website, she said, and working to assign clearer guide posts to help readers distinguish between claims grounded in modern science and those that are more "speculative."

But Caulfield said if the website was fact checked to his standards, there would be little content left, and Goop"s wares would look much less inviting to consumers with full information.

"[Goop] can"t say that they"re going to try to have evidence-based fact-checking and then reject the whole concept of science. They want the best of both worlds."

Loehnen said Goop"s mission is not to debunk established medical knowledge, but to explore the questions that "big pharma" has overlooked, particularly regarding maladies that primarily affect women.

Goop does not typically publish "reported stories" in the traditional sense, said Loehnen, but rather Q&As with doctors who sometimes espouse views that challenge conventional medical wisdom.

"[We"re] looking to them so they could shed light so people can then go to their own primary-care physicians and ask questions," said Loehnen. "The idea is really just to do the work for readers so they feel like they"re armed with information."

"Profiting" off gaps in women"s health

Medical research has documented gender-based discrepancies in health care, with studies suggesting that for a wide range of conditions, men receive more extensive treatment than women presenting similar symptoms.

Winnipeg-raised gynecologist and obstetrician Dr. Jennifer Gunter, who calls herself the "people"s choice" for Goop fact checker, said the company has turned these holes in women"s health care into a business model based on the propagation of medical "conspiracy theories."

"I think that [Goop is] profiting off of the way that women have been ignored by medicine," Gunter said in a phone interview from San Francisco, where she is now based.

"No one who"s selling you products is asking questions. They"re trying to get you to buy the product."

Gunter attended the "In Goop Health" conference in New York earlier this year. On her blog, she challenged many of the claims made by speakers there.

She said she expects Vancouver will see a similar "carnival sideshow" when Goop comes to town in October, but she doesn"t begrudge those who decide to attend the summit for its "entertainment" value.

As Gunter sees it, Goop often blurs the line between things you do for happiness and healing, which she compared to the difference between getting a pedicure and seeing your doctor. Perpetuating this confusion does far more to harm women"s health than help it, she said.

"Women do not benefit from lack of information, and you can only be empowered about your health if you"re informed about it. Using smoke and mirrors to say things that make you happy make you healthier ... is not fair."

 LYNYRD SKYNYRD guitarist ED KING died WEDNESDAY in NASHVILLE at the age of 68. <a href="http://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-country/lynyrd-skynyrd-guitarist-ed-king-dead-at-68-714847/" target="_blank">ROLLING STONE</a> reports. Although no cause of death was specified, KING recently was hospitalized for lung cancer.

A message on KING’s FACEBOOK page confirmed his death: “It is with great sorrow we announce the passing of ED KING who died at his home in NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE on AUGUST 22nd, 2018. We thank his many friends and fans for their love and support of ED during his life and career.”

Guitarist GARY ROSSINGTON said on the band"s page. “I’ve just found out about ED’s passing and I’m shocked and saddened,” he said. “ED was our brother, and a great songwriter and guitar player. I know he will be reunited with the rest of the boys in Rock and Roll Heaven. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family.”

CALIFORNIA native, KING helped launch the psychedelic "60s band STRAWBERRY ALARM CLOCK. He would join LYNYRD SKYNYRD in 1972, temporarily replacing bassist LEON WILKESON before becoming a full-fledged member as third guitarist.

He"s perhaps best known for co-writing “Sweet Home Alabama;” he can be heard counting off “1, 2, 3” in the song’s intro. KING left the band in 1975 after a dust-up with singer RONNIE VAN ZANT.

We"re only a few months into 2017, but things have already gone south for some of our favorite celebrity couples who decided to call it quits this year.
While we hoped their love could stand the test of time, many famous couples have already split in 2017 and our hearts just can"t take it… Here are the seven that really hit us hard.

From a surprise birthday party to Disneyland adventures, Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom were the cutest couple around. But the pair"s love, which became public in January 2016, fizzled out in March of this year. But don"t fear, the two have decided to go about their breakup the ‘adult way’. Orlando recently told Elle UK quote, “we"re friends. It"s good,” and Katy tweeted a new way of thinking, saying “U can still b friends & love ur former partners! No one"s a victim or a villain, get a life y"all!”

In 2016, Kylie Jenner and Tyga were getting cute and cozy at Coachella, but this year the pair ran into each other then went their separate ways after an awkward hug. While they"re known to be off and on, Kyga have officially broken up for the fourth time. In April, it was confirmed to People that the 19 and 27 year old had called it quits. And it may be for good as Kylie is rumored to be hooking up with rapper Travis Scott.

Apparently third time"s a charm doesn"t work for Janet Jackson. After five years of marriage, Janet and her third hubby, Wissam Al Mana, have filed for divorce. This comes only three months after welcoming their first child, Eissa. Although sources say it was amicable, Page Six reports quote, “She thought he had become too controlling during the pregnancy” and that the pair will continue to co-parent their son.

It seemed like it was only a matter of time until we heard wedding bells for Nicki Minaj and Meek Mill, but the couple decided, instead, to leave their relationship in 2016. Ending speculation of her single status Nicki tweeted in the first week of 2017, “To confirm, yes I"m single.” No beating around the bush there!
One Direction isn"t the only thing Louis Tomlinson took a break from recently. The boy bander and actress Danielle Campbell broke things off in January of this year after starting to date at the end 2015. While Danielle had been there for Louis during the birth of his son and his mother"s death, the couple ultimately ended things. Not one to stay single long, Louis" already rebounded with ex Eleanor Calder whom he dated for almost four years.

Just as the Vampire Diaries came to an end, it seems like one TV couple put a wrap on their relationship. We thought for sure after four years of dating, Paul Wesley and Phoebe Tonkin were the real deal, but sadly the actor couple went their separate ways in March. The pair met on the Vampire Diaries set in 2012 and were inseparable ever since, but the good news comes from a source from E! News, saying the exes are QUOTE, “still good friends – the relationship just ran its course.”
And in most recent news, while La La and New York Knicks player Carmelo Anthony did make it down the aisle, the lovebirds have separated after almost seven years of marriage. TMZ reports that Carmelo cheated on La La and got the woman pregnant—yikes! Sources close to the couple claim the marriage had been rocky for a while and this was the tipping point. The two also have a 10-year-old son together.

Little did these men know, Natasha was about to go all #HungerGames on ‘em to find out who was the best match for her, according to @gothamist. Guarded by security, the woman started eliminating men from the running based on a series of characteristics such as supporting Trump or having a long beard.

Benedict Cumberbatch will receive $9.5 million for "Doctor Strange 2".

The 42-year-old actor will reportedly see his pay increased by $6.4 million more than he received for the original Marvel Cinematic Universe movie in 2016 for the upcoming sequel, which is set to start filming next spring and is expected to take up to six months to complete.

And his commitment to the franchise means his work on popular drama series "Sherlock" could be delayed indefinitely.

The British actor has already made $5.4 million for playing Doctor Strange in the first standalone movie, "Thor: Ragnarok" and two "Avengers" films.

Interview: To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before Director Susan Johnson on a Possible Sequel and the Scene That Gets Her Every Time

Director Susan Johnson brought to life Jenny Han’s To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before for Netflix and the result was a romantic comedy that wasn’t only funny and lovely, but hugely important in centering the story of three Asian-American girls.

Johnson loved the story’s protagonist Lara Jean, played by Lana Condor, and the coming-of-age journey she goes through as all the crushes she’s ever had—including the one on her sister’s ex-boyfriend—becomes known through secret love letters. I spoke to Johnson over the phone about making To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before, and whether or not the team would be up for possible sequels: Han’s books include two more books after all. Some lines have been edited for length and clarity.

Creating a supportive, loving, and close family

“What comes through in Jenny’s book so much is just joy, it’s joyful,” says Johnson. “[Lara Jean] loves life even though she’s not adventurous yet, and even though she hasn’t figured out who she is maybe—but she’s a truly good genuine, honest kind person. I just really really appreciated that character at this time.”

Johnson, herself the middle of two girls and super close to her father, says she could relate very much to the Covey family dynamic. “I think the family dynamic in seeing who Lara Jean is as a person was just really important for this romantic comedy,” she says, when I point out how the film spends a lot of time with the Covey family. “Her father’s doing his very best to raise her as a single parent and the sisters have to have their own lives, but obviously caring for her as well—enough to send out a bunch of love letters and put her on the spot, which I think is this sort-of deed of love as just much as it is big mischief.”

“I think about my own support and you don’t often see that in coming-of-age movies,” the director points out, “where there’s not a lot of strife at home—a lot of angst and anger and that’s not this family. They get along and I think that’s really unique.”

But it almost didn’t happen

Of course, another incredibly unique part of To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before is the casting. “Just the story of 3 As-Am girls, that is something that we haven’t seen before and certainly need to see more of,” Johnson says, adding that was “excited to see the Asian American community recognize themselves in this movie as a romantic lead.” In reference to an original film proposal that whitewashed the leads, she says, “I’m so glad Jenny stuck to her guns and said, ‘If we make a movie out of the book, we’re staying true to the ethnicity of the characters.’ I thought that was really great of her to do—smart, unique, and fresh.”

Lana Condor’s amazing comedic talents

Like all of the internet over the weekend, Johnson is happy to gush over Lana Condor’s acting talent. “She gets to play all these other characters in the other side of her career where she’s a superhero, like in her new show Deadly Class and like, X-men and stuff, so it’s fun to see her on the romantic comedy side. She’s so fun, she’s so talented—she just has a face you want to watch.”

One example? “The other day I had to pull a scene for something—I pulled the bus scene where she’s in the back of the bus with Chris and I had it on slow frame so you see each frame. I watched her face go through seven different emotions in the space of about a-second-and-a-half of film and to me that was just so amazing! She just is so talented and she’s so intuitive and she’s so funny that I just hope she will go save the world and fight superheroes and all that stuff, and then come back and give us more comedy because she’s really a uniquely gifted actress.”

Johnson’s love of romantic comedies, and the Peter/Lana chemistry

Much like Lara Jean, who’s an avid reader of romance novels and a fan of John Hughes movies, Johnson is a big romantic comedy fan. “I love When Harry Met Sally,” she says, “My favorite movie is The Philadelphia Story with Cary Grant, Katharine Hepburn, and Jimmy Stewart. Way, way back, it just taught me how to listen to dialogue and have that energy—and missed opportunity is always such a big part of romantic comedies and keeping people apart until the very end is so exciting.”

“This movie was a little more challenging because they are having to play on-screen as if they’re together before they’re actually together, so finding that line where you could believe the story and know that they felt for each other is a little bit tricky…until we cast the movie and saw the dynamic between Noah and Lana. Their chemistry was so great that we could go in any direction with them on set.”

Will there be more To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before?

Fans of the book know that there’s much more in the horizon for Peter and Lara Jean in P.S. I Still Love You and Always and Forever, Lara Jean. So will we see them again? “Oh, I hope so. I hope so,” says Johnson. “We’re all attached, so hopefully it’ll just be a matter of how well it does. Like, Netflix watches all those numbers and you know, it’s all really about viewership. Fortunately we have really strong responses to the movie critically, so we just have to rely on the fans and hopefully we’ll be able to make another couple movies.

I had dinner with Lana and Noah last week and they were like, ‘We gotta hurry up before we’re too old! I don’t want to be 28 playing high school!’ I was like, ‘Ok, we’ll try and get on it’, but I certainly think there’s plenty of material in books 2 and 3 and we would all love to do it.”

It"s a sad fact; many Hollywood marriages end in divorce.Last week Katie Holmes filed for divorce after 5 years of marriage to Tom Cruise.

Tom is reportedly devastated. Katie has filed for full custody of the couple"s five-year-old daughter, Suri.

But not all Hollywood unions end in happily never after. Let"s look at some happily married Tinseltown couples.

Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson have been married for fourteen years, this close couple also work together. Rita coached Tom for his accent in "The Terminal", and when she produced the huge hit "My Big Fat Greek Wedding", Tom was the office gopher.

Couple number two are Danny DeVito and Rhea Perlman. They met in 1978 while filming "Taxi", and have celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary this year.They have three children together.

Our third couple today is Martin Sheen and Janet Templeton, who have been married an incredible 51 years this December. One of ten children, Martin almost died from a heart attack at age 39, and suffered from bouts of alcohol abuse, but their marriage has stood the test of time.

Last but not least today is the union of Catherine Zeta-Jones and Michael Douglas. Both share the same birthday, but Michael is 25 years older. They have been married 12 years this November. Their wedding featured a Welsh choir of forty, a six foot wedding cake and twenty thousand roses. Sounds like the setting for a fairytale wedding.

Today: I maintained the integrity of my maintenance calorie budget, I remained refined sugar-free, I met my daily water goal, and I stayed well connected with exceptional support.

DDWL Q & A!

Rebecca writes: "I"m just starting. What should I eat? How did you develop your food plan?"

I can"t tell you what to eat. I believe we must create that list based on our own list of personal trigger foods, food substances that bring about a "must have more" reaction and I believe it must be based on our individual preferences.

I have a very long list of trigger foods. I don"t eat refined sugar because when I do, the addictive part of my brain lights up like a pinball machine. Still, I eat what I like as long as it isn"t on my trigger list and doesn"t contain refined sugar, and nothing I don"t. And the choices I"m making are made because it"s where I am, now.

Key, in my opinion--is finding what works for you. Discovering what you can do, what you like and how you like it, is imperative. Finding complete self-honesty about trigger foods is most important.

But to start...

I don"t like labeling anything "right or wrong/good or bad." Food is food. Eat what you like, just set a budget and consistently stay within the budget. If you"re having difficulty maintaining the integrity of your budget, don"t kick yourself--instead, look at the foods. Maybe there"s something in there that needs to be on your personal trigger list. Also, trust that your choices will evolve over time.

If you"ve ever been handed a pre-set food plan and told to follow it to the letter--and you didn"t like everything on the list, but you choked it down anyway--that"s a means to an end.

The experts creating the perfect food plans are not wrong, necessarily, they"re just not taking into account the human element.

If whatever we"re doing isn"t something we can do forever--if it isn"t sustainable, then it"s temporary. We can white knuckle it and adhere to a food plan in the name of "I can do anything for a short time," and we"ll see those results, but as soon as it"s over--it"s back to what we prefer, and that"s why, in my opinion--we should just start with what we prefer in the first place, allowing our plan to evolve as we maneuver our budget and boundaries.

If you"ve been a regular reader of this blog for the last nearly ten years, you might remember days where a Snickers Bar, Ice cream, cake, fast food cheeseburgers and Taco Bell all made their way into my budget. I don"t look back on that time and think, wow--I didn"t eat very well. I look back and think, that"s where I was and needed to be at that time. I"m not saying it"s a good idea to rush out and stock up on these things. I"m just saying...

Having been 500 pounds for so long, I instinctively knew that I wasn"t going to change a lifetime of habits overnight. And I felt like if I tried, it would end up another failed attempt. In my opinion, the "nothing is off limits" philosophy is still valid and important, because it allows us to be where we are, be ourselves--growing and developing in a natural, organic way.

We learn about ourselves along the way. I"ve learned that I can"t do refined sugar. My over four years of abstinence so far has made a profound difference in many different areas of my life. It"s by far the single most important recovery decision I"ve made along the way. It took a 164-pound relapse/regain to arrive at that conclusion and finally releasing my denial. Some things, for me, are harder to learn. And that"s ok.

Had I not crashed and burned over and over, maybe I wouldn"t have found a place of acceptance for my condition.

But not everybody is a food addict and compulsive overeater like me; addicted to refined sugar with four decades of experience in stuffing emotions and stress with food. Abstaining from certain food substances may not be what"s right for you.

The main reason why I"ve always been a proponent of simplicity when it comes to food is because along this road it"s about so much more than food and exercise. The mental/emotional/psychological elements in play are all bigger and more challenging than "what should I eat?"

In my opinion, if the greater focus is placed on the food and exercise instead of the mental/emotional/psychological dynamics--then we end up facing the biggest elements unprepared. It becomes "diet mentality." A focus on a simplistic food plan backed up with solid accountability and support has a really good chance of working well for the long haul. Recovery programs and support groups are great ideas. We don"t do this alone.

There are no right or wrong foods. Eat what you like and allow yourself a natural evolution of good choices along the way. The practice of maintaining the integrity of a calorie budget can have a powerful impact on this evolution because we"re trying to get the most value for our calories. The evolution only occurs with a sacred level of self-honesty and a willingness to reach out for support when we recognize a breach coming on, otherwise, there isn"t a reason to navigate the calorie budget for the best calorie values if we"re constantly violating the budget.

And please, never compare what you"re eating to someone else"s food. Remember, we"re all different. I"m in maintenance mode with a generous calorie budget and a food plan evolved over the last ten years.

Comparing ourselves to others is common, right? But...

Sometimes, the biggest mental hurdles come when we compare what we"re eating to our own expectations or what we perceive to be what we should be eating or what we"ve heard is best or the healthier choice. Take what fits you and leave the rest. Don"t harshly judge your well-fitting food plan.

My best advice is to let it go. Just be you and give yourself room to grow and develop. You be you. Ultimately, we"re wanting a measure of peace and stability and as a "side effect," to arrive at our healthiest weight--and if we arrive at a healthy weight range for our body--and along the way our health improves dramatically--and we do it in a way that fits us, individually--then we"ve successfully shifted the focus away from the old diet mentality--we"ve accepted and embraced the plan we"ve created specifically for us--and now, how does it all compare to the pre-planned diets of old?? The ones that were nutritionally sound but lacked a human consideration--the ones difficult to sustain--the ones challenging our addictions, compulsive food behaviors, and ultimately, our ability to remain consistent??

Simple is sustainable, sustainable encourages consistency and consistency beats intensity, every single time.

I"m not a nutritionist or a dietician. I"m not an expert. I just have my experience.

I will say this-- our food plans don"t mean a thing if we"re not willing to do the deeper work. It doesn"t matter how many years I"ve been at this, I humbly admit-- I don"t "got it." It takes a daily practice and a willingness to be open to recovery based perspectives in order to break the diet mentality.

I"ve got a long way to go with my recovery. But I"m going. I assure you, I"m going one day at a time.

The travel has taken me all over the world and even inspired me to create our Traveler. The inspiration and people I"ve met along the way have truly influenced the evolution of the brand.

What"s the most daring career risk you"ve taken?
Investing in myself. I started BYCHARI with only $100 and had no business starting a company. Yet, I was determined to work for myself and build a brand I could be proud of and in return, empowered other women.

Who are your career heroes?
Oprah, Sarah Gibson Tuttle, founder of Olive & June, and Sophia Amoruso just to name a few.

Every day varies, but a typical West Hollywood day starts with coffee, Pilates and a barrage of emails.

Tell us about your office décor.
Island Minimal. Clean fresh most recently described as having an "indoor-outdoor" vibe. The neutral space and furniture reminds me of a blank canvas and lends to a space where we can be creative yet feel comfortable.
